HS Code Structure Explained: What Does Each Digit Mean?
HS Code Structure Explained: What Does Each Digit Mean?
Why Is the HS Code So Long?
Most importers see the HS code as just a number. In reality, it's the common language of international trade — used identically by 200+ countries.
The code looks long, but each group of digits has its own meaning. Once you understand the structure, you can read any product's code yourself.
The 4 Parts of an HS Code
Part 1 — Chapter (2 digits)
The first 2 digits indicate the chapter. There are 97 chapters, each covering a broad product category:
| Chapter | Category |
|---|---|
| 01–05 | Live animals, animal products |
| 06–14 | Vegetable products |
| 27 | Mineral fuels, petroleum |
| 61–63 | Textiles, apparel |
| 84 | Machinery, mechanical equipment |
| 85 | Electrical equipment, electronics |
| 87 | Vehicles |
| 90 | Optical, medical instruments |
Example: Laptop → Chapter 84 (Machinery)
Part 2 — Heading (4 digits)
The next 2 digits identify the heading within the chapter:
84 + 71 = 8471 → Automatic data processing machines (computers)
Part 3 — Subheading (6 digits — International)
The 6-digit code is the international HS code. All 200+ countries share the same system up to this level:
8471 + .30 = 8471.30 → Portable automatic data processing machines (laptops)
This 6-digit code means the same product in every country on earth.
Part 4 — National Split (8–10 digits — country-specific)
In Azerbaijan, the TN XIF code is 10 digits. The last 4 digits are national detail:
8471.30 + .00.10 = 8471.30.00.10 → Exact TN XIF code for Azerbaijan

- Customs delay: Document mismatch causes cargo to be held
- Import ban: Some codes require special permits
