What Is Landed Cost? How to Calculate the Real Cost of Importing

Why the Product Price Isn't Enough

"I ordered a container from China, each unit costs $10" — this is only half the truth.

The real question: What does each unit cost when it arrives at your warehouse in Baku?

To calculate this, we use the concept of Landed Cost.

What Is Landed Cost?

Landed Cost is the total of all costs from the supplier's warehouse in the origin country to the buyer's warehouse.

Landed Cost = Product value + Freight + Insurance + Customs duty + VAT + Other charges

Each Component Explained

1. Product Value (FOB or EXW)

The price you pay the supplier. FOB (Free On Board) = price after loading onto the vessel/wagon. EXW (Ex Works) = price at the supplier's warehouse.

2. International Freight

Transport cost from origin port/warehouse to Baku.

RouteAverage cost (20ft container)
China → Baku (rail)$3,000–5,000
China → Baku (sea)$2,000–3,500
Turkey → Baku (road)$1,500–2,500
Europe → Baku (road)$2,500–4,000

3. Insurance

Typically 0.3%–0.5% of cargo value. For $50,000 cargo: $150–250.

4. Customs Duty

In Azerbaijan: 0%–15% based on HS code. Wrong HS code = wrong duty rate.

CategoryDuty rate
Computers, phones0%
Auto parts5–10%
Clothing, textiles15%
Food products5–15%
Machinery0–5%

5. VAT (Value Added Tax)

Standard VAT in Azerbaijan: 18%

VAT base: (Product value + Freight + Customs duty) × 18%

6. Other Charges

  • Port/terminal fees: $100–400
  • Customs brokerage fee: $150–500
  • Storage fees: depends on dwell time
  • Local delivery: port to warehouse

Full Calculation Example

Goods: 500 laptops, China (Shanghai), HS: 8471.30

ComponentAmount
Product value (FOB)$50,000
Rail freight (Shanghai→Baku)$4,200
Insurance (0.4%)$200
Customs duty (0%)$0
VAT 18% × ($50,000 + $4,200)$9,756
Terminal + brokerage$600
**Total Landed Cost****$64,756**
**Real cost per laptop****$129.51** (you thought it was only $100)

29.5% additional cost — if you hadn't planned for this, your margin would have evaporated.

How to Calculate Landed Cost

Manual method: Calculate each component separately — time-consuming, risk of errors.

Automated: Zentria Flow™ — enter HS code, product value, origin country, get full Landed Cost with all components in 2 seconds. Live tariff data for 70+ countries.

Why Landed Cost Matters

For pricing

The import price of what you sell is the Landed Cost, not the FOB price. Wrong calculation = loss.

For financial planning

Plan your bank credit, letter of credit against Landed Cost.

For competitiveness

If your competitor works with lower Landed Cost (correct HS code, FTA preferences) — they can sell cheaper.
